DKMS and Lolo’s Angels
An article from our DKMS Donor Recruiter, Carol Goplin DKMS and the Hacker Family
In March of 2016, LesLee and I had a brief email introduction but it was heartfelt. As we later “conversed” she decided to let many of their friends learn about the national bone marrow registry through DKMS. In a few short months, we put together 30 plus registration events in honor of Lauren.
Lauren’s experiences, pull at everyone’s heart, but over and over as I contacted all the wonderful people who wanted to help, I heard how genuine and kind the whole family is. The reputation of a Hacker is wonderful and lasting. The grade school teachers of their past, co-workers, long-distance and close friends all said similar lovely things and wanted to do their best to honor Lauren. One corporation had each satellite in their organization have a registration event – thank you Green Plains. Other groups like the Kicks for a Cure eighth graders are doing bi-annual events, with the next two dates already in the planning phase. Thank you to all of you who have and are joining us in this mission!
Although I have yet to meet with any of the Hacker family members face to face I feel blessed to be a part of the positive energy that surrounds them through the people they have touched. It seems that they needed LoLo’s Angels, but they may not have realized how they have been and are other people’s angels..
Because of this friendship, we have had 39 registration events with many more to come. The potential of the DKMS and Hacker registration drives offers more life saving transplants from donors to recipients in need. What an impressive legacy this family is making!
For those of you unfamiliar with DKMS, please take a moment to read the following and let me know if you would like to help with our mission too.
DKMS: We Delete Blood Cancer is part of the world’s largest bone marrow donor center. We have helped register more than 7.3 million potential donors who have provided 63,000 patients with second chances at life. Patients whose doctors turn to us include those diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell, and other blood or bone disorders for whom other treatments are failing.
Every day we work with families, students, organizations, and people like you to host more donor drives that can help save more lives. Check us out at www.dkms.org
Hosting a drive is easy!
We provide everything you need to enlist and educate volunteers and inspire new donor registrations. We also promote your event across our social media channels to our thousands of loyal friends and followers. On a registration event day, people will register in minutes and walk away with a sense of pride and hope that’s sure to last for days. Those who are lucky enough to become donors will feel like life-savers for years. Consider having a DKMS donor drive or swab party at your next family gathering, staff meeting, church service, or other event.
Please contact email@example.com for more information and I will be happy to help you add to the LAU drive list! (LAU drives are all for Lauren connections.)
Most people do not realize that a simple cheek swab is all it takes to enter the database and find out if they can potentially save a person in need.
